The job responsibilities of the General Practice (GP) Assistant include but are not limited to: Sorting all clinical post and prioritising for the General Practitoner (GP) in terms of actions. Signposting some post to others such as clinical pharmacist etc. Extracting all information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding to notes. Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patients.
Preparing patients prior to going in to see the GP, taking a brief history and basic readings in readiness for the GP appointment. Taking blood pressure, & phlebotomy. Urine dipstick and send off MC&S as appropriate. Inform patients of normal results.
Escalate abnormal results to relevant clinician/ duty doctor as appropriate. New patient review clinics, aims to meet QOF/LQC targets and carry out necessary medical observations. Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms, mortgage, benefits agency forms etc. Explaining treatment procedures to patients.
Assist GP to complete shared care agreement and send out relevant safety net letter to patients. Complete 2-week rule referrals. Clinicians are expected to complete 2-week rule referral template for the relevant specialty. GPA will then book appointment on C&B and complete all the necessary safety net measures.
Complete C&B referrals for A&E or ACU by extracting relevant information from EMIS notes. Undertake any other additional duties appropriate to the post as requested. The postholder will undertake a GPA Training Programme. The GPA Skills certificate is an accredited training programme based on a competency framework.
