UK App access: The Cleo app is no longer downloadable in the UK (but only until next year). If you're an existing user, you'll still have access to the app. But some features won't be available (just for a little while). Why? 99% of our users are based in the US – where financial health is often overlooked. We've decided to shift our focus to where we can provide the most value and make the greatest impact for users who need it most. Then we'll be able to apply what we learn to better support our UK users in the future.
About The Role
As Cleo scales quickly, builds new products, and welcomes more users, you'll help keep our platform secure and our growth sustainable. Using data-driven insights, you'll turn rich user data into real impact, cutting down fraud and strengthening our decision-making. You'll also partner with third-party providers, assessing their value and integrating their data into Cleo's core systems.

In addition, you'll be responsible for understanding and monitoring how our fraud rules impact trusted customers, ensuring our flows remain as seamless as possible. You'll frequently run A/B tests to refine our approach, driving continuous improvements to both the product and overall user experience.

You'll also sit within the wider data function here at Cleo; a hotshot chapter of 80 Machine Learning Engineers, Product Analysts, and Analytic Engineers with significant industry experience who are at the heart of everything we do at Cleo.

Key responsibilities

  • Define key fraud metrics and track KPIs to assess true risk to the company and our users
  • Dig deep into our user behaviour and payments data to identify features indicative of potential fraud
  • Collaborate with fraud investigators, to identify trends, optimise existing rules and create new ones if necessary, aiming to prevent future losses
  • Work alongside our engineering, product, and data science partners to build a best-in-class fraud prevention, detection and response framework
  • Collaborate with and assess potential third party partners that can supplement customer data or make more precise risk decisions.

About You

  • Experience doing quantitative analysis within a digital product environment
  • Exposure to both user facing product analytics as well as back-end process improvements.
  • Proven track record of proactively conducting root cause analysis, and/or optimising existing processes.
  • Strong SQL skills with the ability to extract insights from complex data sources.
  • Comfortable with defining metrics from scratch and creating dashboards
  • Familiarity with conducting large-scale A/B experiments
  • Proven experience contributing to strategic planning, including roadmap development and initiative prioritisation.

Nice to have

  • Previous experience evaluating the performance of fraud rules.
  • Experience in an adversarial risk prevention or detection space, whether in fincrime prevention, or account security.

What do you get for all your hard work?

  • A competitive compensation package (base + equity) with bi-annual reviews, aligned to our quarterly OKR planning cycles. You can view our public progression framework and salary bandings here: https://cleo-
  • Work at one of the fastest-growing tech startups, backed by top VC firms, Balderton & EQT Ventures
  • A clear progression plan. We want you to keep growing. That means trying new things, leading others, challenging the status quo and owning your impact. Always with our complete support.
  • Flexibility. We can't fight for the world's financial health if we're not healthy ourselves. We work with everyone to make sure they have the balance they need to do their best work
  • Work where you work best. We're a globally distributed team. If you live in London we have a hybrid approach, we'd love you to spend one day a week or more in our beautiful office. If you're outside of London, we'll encourage you to spend a couple of days with us a few times per year. And we'll cover your travel costs, naturally.
