Housing Officer
Be the first point of support for our residents, making sure homes are safe, communities are strong and services are delivered with care.
Working as a Housing Officer in the Lancaster West Neighbourhood Team is rewarding. You'll be right at the frontline, delivering customer-focused housing management for tenants and leaseholders. This role is about much more than day-to-day service – it's about making the borough a safer, cleaner and fairer place to live.
Working Style:
You'll be based in the Borough for 4 days a week, playing a key role in serving the local community. Whether you're working on the frontline or behind the scenes, you'll be part of a dedicated team making a real difference to residents' lives.
What you'll be doing:
You'll be a familiar and trusted contact for residents, supporting them across a wide range of housing issues. No two days will be the same – this is a varied, fast-paced role where your work has a real impact on people's lives and the wider community.
A big part of your work will be tenancy management. That means carrying out tenancy audits, giving advice on housing options and successions, and helping residents sustain their homes. You'll prepare legal documentation when needed and take enforcement action where it's necessary, always with a focus on fairness and support. You'll also manage allocations and make sure void properties are re-let quickly, keeping the estate running smoothly.
Income collection will also be a key focus. You'll proactively manage rent accounts and service charges, stepping in early to agree repayment plans and offering advice on financial support such as Universal Credit and Housing Benefit. Where things can't be resolved, you'll represent the Council in legal proceedings.
Neighbourhood management is at the heart of this role. You'll work alongside cleaning, maintenance and grounds teams to keep blocks and communal spaces safe, clean and welcoming. You'll carry out inspections, report and resolve issues such as graffiti or fly-tipping, and respond quickly to concerns. You'll also lead on anti-social behaviour cases, working with residents, the police and partners to improve safety and cohesion.
Above all, you'll be building relationships. You'll get to know residents and community groups, involve them in shaping services, and make sure health and safety standards are consistently met.
For further details, please review the Job Description and Person Specification
What you'll bring
You'll bring solid, hands-on experience in housing management – whether in tenancy and rent services, anti-social behaviour or neighbourhood management. A strong understanding of housing legislation, particularly around social housing tenancies and ASB, is essential.
We're looking for someone dynamic, adaptable and highly organised, who can keep on top of a varied caseload in a busy environment. You'll have excellent people skills and the confidence to deal with challenging situations fairly, assertively and with empathy.
Most importantly, you'll be committed to delivering a high-quality, resident-focused service. You'll live our values – putting communities first, respecting difference, acting with integrity and working collaboratively. While a degree or equivalent qualification is helpful, what matters most is your proven ability to deliver excellent housing services in a neighbourhood setting.
