We are the digital centre of government, and our communications team is focused on supporting GDS's role in setting, leading and delivering the vision for a modern digital government. We work closely with the central Department Science, Innovation and Technology communications teams on planning and delivery.
Our purpose
GDS has unique communications objectives to support delivery of the vision set out in the blueprint for a modern digital government. Building on a historic model of embedded agile communications, our multi-disciplinary team is dedicated to the delivery of specific products and programmes within GDS. We can best deliver this by maintaining an in-depth understanding of the subject matter and audiences.
The purpose of GDS specific comms is:
To ensure stakeholders (staff, civil/public servants, departments, industry) understand the purpose, goals and benefits set out in the blueprint and are motivated and ready to partner with us to deliver it.
To inform users about the improved ways they can interact with government, which are more convenient for them, and more efficient for government - and motivate them to adopt the channel shift and/or behaviour change.
To enhance the UK government's reputation for digital excellence in pursuit of attracting and retaining world class digital talent.
Key responsibilities:
The Digital Communications Manager will have responsibility for leading GDS's communication through digital channels, ensuring messages are tailored to different audiences and channels, delivering measurable impact.
You will be responsible for:
Designing, delivering and continuously evaluating a digital communications plan, aligned to the wider communications strategy, that supports business priorities and delivers measurable outcomes.
Using expert knowledge and experience to lead GDS's approach to digital communications, advising on the most effective formats and channels to achieve business and policy objectives.
Gathering insight on GDS's priority audiences through social listening and using this to give evidence based advice to inform communications plans.
Commissioning or creating a wide range of engaging content that supports GDS's communications strategy and meets accessibility requirements.
Advising colleagues at all levels on effective digital content creation, including editing drafted content such as blog posts and e-newsletter entries, and/or discussing the aims and objectives of content to advise on the most effective format and style.
Leading the effective maintenance and implementation of social media guidelines for the organisation including on managing reputational risks.
Essential Criteria:
You will:
Have expert knowledge of a range of digital communications channels, you'll have experience in creating digital content for social media or web and demonstrate skills such as design, photography, video, analytics or publishing - or you might specialise in one or more. You'll also have a practical understanding of emerging digital services, tools and trends, including techniques for optimising digital content. This gives you the expertise to use audience insight and advise on the right digital channels and formats to achieve desired outcomes.
Cope comfortably in a fast-paced environment and thrive on driving creative and innovative content solutions. You should have demonstrable experience of leading the delivery and measurement of digital communications activity such as social media, blogs and web publications.

Alongside your salary of £36,728, Department for Science, Innovation & Technology contributes £10,640 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Find out what benefits a Civil Service Pension provides.

Office attendance
The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK. The current expectation for staff is to attend the office or non-home-based location for 40-60% of the time over the accounting period.
