Leicestershire LGBTQ+ Centre has been a cornerstone of support for the LGBTQ+ community in Leicester since 1976. Originally established as one of the UK's first gay helplines, the Centre has spent nearly 50 years advocating for the rights, wellbeing, and visibility of LGBTQ+ individuals. Our mission is to continue championing equality and inclusion across Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland, creating safe and supportive spaces for all LGBTQ+ individuals.
About the Role
This role is responsible for coordinating and supporting the charity's volunteer programme, ensuring that both volunteers and service users benefit from high-quality, inclusive support. The post-holder will oversee day-to-day volunteer activities, ensuring that volunteers are well-prepared, supported, and equipped to contribute effectively to the organisation's services.
The role involves working with a range of professionals and community partners, including local organisations, networks, and stakeholders, to promote volunteer engagement and strengthen the charity's impact. The post-holder will also provide guidance and support to volunteers and staff, ensuring they have the training, resources, and confidence to deliver services in line with best practice and safeguarding standards.
The role requires strong organisational skills, the ability to manage workloads independently, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive, welcoming environment. Additionally, the post-holder will contribute to monitoring, reporting, and development activities, helping to sustain and grow the charity's volunteer programme.
Key Responsibilities
1. Provide Support for Volunteers
- Maintain regular and effective communication with volunteers through emails, newsletters, meetings, and one-to-one support.
- Provide ongoing training, guidance, and development opportunities.
- Organise volunteer review meetings and social gatherings to encourage connection and recognition.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive volunteer culture aligned with the charity's values.
2. Coordinate Volunteer Activities
Oversee volunteer activity across a range of areas such as:
- Community drop-ins, events, and workshop
- Outreach and befriending activities
- Administrative or behind-the-scenes support
- Ensure appropriate volunteer coverage and availability of resources at each activity.
- Respond to any issues or challenges promptly, identifying training or process improvements where necessary.
- Ensure volunteers have clear roles, responsibilities, and opportunities for growth.
3. Recruit and Train New Volunteers
- Develop new volunteer opportunities in line with organisational needs and volunteer feedback.
- Lead on advertising, recruitment, and selection to ensure equality, diversity, and inclusion.
- Design and deliver induction and training sessions, including safeguarding, confidentiality, and health and safety.
- Ensure volunteers understand and use data collection and monitoring systems appropriately.
4. Quality Assurance, Monitoring and Evaluation
- Develop and maintain volunteer policies and procedures in line with best practice and current legislation.
- Keep up to date with volunteer management standards (e.g. Investing in Volunteers).
- Maintain accurate volunteer records and provide reports as required.
- Coordinate volunteer involvement in community events and projects, engaging them in planning and delivery.
An enhanced DBS check will be required for this post.

Qualifications
- A good standard of education, including GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade C/4 or above.
Experience and Skills
- Experience in supporting, recruiting, or coordinating volunteers in a community or charity setting.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage people from a wide range of backgrounds.
- Strong understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality, and professional boundaries.
- Proven ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
- Experience designing or delivering training sessions (desirable).
- Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, especially regarding LGBTQ+ rights and representation.
Knowledge
- Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and confidentiality, following GDPR principles.
- Confident digital skills, including Microsoft Excel, websites, social media, and databases.
- Understanding of trauma-informed and/or person-centred approaches (desirable).
- Familiarity with volunteer management systems or databases (desirable).
Other Requirements
- Flexible approach to working hours, including occasional early mornings or evenings when required.
- Full, clean driving licence and access to a car for work purposes (with business insurance).
