T
About the NFTMO )

Founded in 1992 (incorporated in 2003) as a membership organisation working on behalf of tenant led management organisations in England, the NFTMO has since developed a key strategic role in the sector with a wide range of services and products. The NFTMO is non-political and has always maintained good working relationships with government ministers and agencies. We provide important 'grass roots' experience to help inform government policies that seek to involve local communities in the management or ownership of their local public services and assets. We work in collaboration with a range of sector partners and are one of the three National Tenants Organisations recognised by Government.

The NFTMO is incorporated as a company limited by guarantee and currently has around 100 organisations in membership, the majority of operating TMOs. The objects of the Federation as set out in the rules are:-

  1. To represent and protect the interests of all members of the Federation.
  2. To give support to new and existing TMOs by enabling the sharing of experience, information and skills.
  3. To strengthen the tenants' and residents' voice to influence, and to improve dialogue with, central and local government.
  4. To promote and encourage training for tenants and residents involved in, or interested in becoming involved in the management of their estates.
  5. To promote and increase membership of the Federation throughout the United Kingdom.
  6. To promote nationally and locally the benefits of TMOs and to promote laws and policies that will create conditions that are favourable to the continued development of TMOs.
  7. To promote and support good practice in the activities of TMOs

The members at AGM elect an Executive Committee which is the body that manages the Federation. The Articles[1] of the NFTMO say that the Executive Committee may include up to 12 TMO representatives from the combined Midlands and North regions of the country and 9 from the South. In addition, the NFTMO can co-opt independent experts and it includes a nominee from CCH (the Confederation of Co-operative Housing) and LACOG (The Local Authority Co-op Officers Group). The Committee currently meets about once every 2 months with the meetings being held online. The Executive holds a residential weekend annually which enables it to discuss issues in greater depth and review its business plan.
