The Role

The Centre Manager is responsible for the overall operation of the summer school (except for the academic programme delivery, which is the responsibility of the Director of Studies)

  • …line managing and supporting a team of sports & activities leaders
  • …line managing the Welfare Officer(s)
  • …holding daily briefings with staff
  • …liaising with Head Office and enacting the planned activities programme schedule & excursions
  • …being the point of contact for agents and group leaders vis-à-vis complaints and queries regarding the activities programme
  • …managing facilities and resources at the site

Salford: Sunday 28 June to Sunday 9 August

Portsmouth: Sunday 28 June to Sunday 26 July

Programme Information

The Activities Programme

The activities programme runs from 09:00 to 22:00 every day of the week. We offer a range of activities to meet the interests of international teenagers. The activities programme is coordinated by the Centre Manager, who line manages the Sports & Activities Leaders. Mostly, activities are held on site at the university campuses, but there are also off-site activities (such as bowling and adventure golf), as well as excursions to local sites of interest as well as other cities. The Centre Manager is directly responsible for implementing the activities programme, which is designed and communicated to them by Head Office.

  • Sports: Dodgeball, Badminton, Basketball, Table Tennis, Football, Volleyball, Swimming, etc.
  • Arts & Crafts: Clay modelling, Jewellery making, Mosaic tile-coasters, Rock painting,Tie-dye T-shirts, etc.
  • Premium Venues: Laser Quest, Bowling, Adventure Golf, Aquarium, Etihad Stadium, Spinnaker Tower
  • Local Excursions: Libraries, Galleries, Museums, Beaches & parks
  • Games & Events: Baking, Karaoke, Discos, Card games, Board games, Bingo, Quizzes, Dance, Yoga

Conditions of Employment

  • Centre Managers are contracted to work for 48 hours per week. In any one week this may work out to be a little fewer or greater than 48 hours, but it should average out to be this amount. Any extra hours will be paid as overtime at the end of contract.
  • Centre Managers are assisted by an Assistant Centre Manager, who works in opposing shifts to the Centre Manager, and assumes their authority as team line manager in the Centre Manager's absence. While the Centre Manager has organisational superiority, the roles are largely identical.
  • The Centre Manager reports directly to the Head of Junior Summer Schools and Groups, in Head Office.

About Salford

The Salford campus is at the University of Salford, and the programme runs for 6 weeks.

Half day excursions visit places like the Manchester Museum and John Rylands Library, and Saturday excursions include Liverpool, York and Chester.

The University of Salford is a self-contained campus on the outskirts of Manchester; it is the larger of the two summer schools with a busy and varied activities programme.

About Portsmouth

The Portsmouth campus is at the University of Portsmouth, and the programme runs for 4 weeks.

Half day excursions go to Portsmouth city centre, and include venues such as the Spinnaker Tower and Southsea Castle.

The University of Portsmouth is a city campus, meaning that it is in the city centre with staff and students being 'out and about' in the city every day.
