We are looking to hire a Director of Studies for our summer school at the University of Salford (Manchester) in 2026. The weekly salary is £950 per week, and includes full board accommodation throughout. The dates are 20 June to 7 August.

The Role
The Director of Studies is responsible for the academic programme delivery at the centre. The role includes…
- …line managing and supporting a team of teachers
- …arranging speaking tests and assessment & placement procedures
- …holding daily briefings with teachers
- …conducting classroom observations and providing teachers with constructive feedback
- …being the point of contact for agents and group leaders vis-à-vis complaints and queries regarding the academic programme
- …managing teaching facilities and resources
Academic Programme Delivery
Students attend classes for 3 hours either in the mornings or afternoons each week. The teaching programme runs on a 'zig-zag' system, where typically a class will have classes in the morning in week 1, and then in the afternoon in week 2 (and so on). Teachers teaching 30-hour weeks have 3 hours' teaching one class in the morning and another 3 hours' teaching a different class in the afternoon, and work Mondays to Fridays. Some teachers work part-time (15 hrs), where they will teach only a morning or an afternoon in any given week, and may also work on Saturdays. Lesson plans and teaching resources are provided.

10:30 – 11:00: Break
11:00 – 12:30: Teaching
12:30 – 14:00: Lunch
14:00 – 15:30: Teaching
15:30 – 16:00: Break
16:00 – 17:30: Teaching

Each week has a different teaching topic, with language teaching taking place in thematic context.

Excursions
Part-time teacher also lead local excursions during periods that they are not teaching; venues include galleries and museums.
Each Saturday, the students go on full-day excursions to other towns/cities; preparation for (and feedback on) these trips is an additional part of the teaching syllabus.
Head Office Support
- We offer administrative and logistical support from Head Office.
- We place students into classes, and design and communicate teaching schedules
- We make and communicate staff rotas and timetables, and keep track of working hours.
- We provide the syllabus and all teaching facilities
- We provide contingency cover arrangements
Management Induction, Training and Preparation
Before the students arrive, all managers have eight days for training and preparation. These comprise in person management training and programme familiarisation, on site preparation, and video and in-person teams training.
About Salford
The Salford campus is at the University of Salford, and the programme runs for 6 weeks.
Half day excursions visit places like the Manchester Museum and John Rylands Library, and Saturday excursions include Liverpool, York and Chester.
The University of Salford is a self-contained campus on the outskirts of Manchester; it is the larger of the two summer schools with a busy and varied activities programme.

- …be aged 18+, and have the right to work in the UK
- …have a TEFLQ qualification (DELTA, DipTESOL, etc.)
- …not have any criminal convictions which indicate you are unsuitable to work with children
- …be able to start work on Saturday 20 June 2026
- …and be able to work through until the end of the summer period
