Many pupils may require support with fine and gross motor skills, sensory regulation, daily living skills, and engagement in learning tasks. Your role will be central in helping them develop independence, functional skills, self-regulation, and confidence in daily routines. Working alongside teachers, SENCOs, and on-site therapists, you will gain valuable insight into the strategies and interventions used by Occupational Therapists, giving you a strong foundation for further training and helping you determine whether this is the right career path for you. Assist with activities designed to promote fine and gross motor development, coordination, and functional independence. Use sensory strategies—such as sensory circuits, movement breaks, weighted items, or calming routines—to support pupils’ regulation and engagement. Adapt classroom tasks for pupils who need support with motor planning, sequencing, organisation, or physical access. Encourage independence in routine-based activities, including transitions, self-help skills, and personalised learning tasks. Promote engagement, attention, and emotional regulation through structured play and sensory-informed approaches. Support pupils who may experience frustration, anxiety, or sensory overload with calm, consistent, and nurturing responses. Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, SENCOs, and external professionals to ensure holistic support. Monitor pupils’ progress, record observations, and share insights with staff and families. Help maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment that meets a wide range of sensory and physical needs.
