You will work with pupils who have Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC), sensory processing needs, communication challenges, and varied developmental profiles. Many pupils may be non-verbal or use alternative communication methods such as PECS, objects of reference, visual supports, or speech-generating devices. Your role will be central in helping them develop expressive and receptive communication skills, social interaction, and confidence in daily routines. Working alongside teachers, SENCOs, and on-site therapists, you will gain valuable insight into the strategies and interventions used by Speech and Language Therapists, giving you a strong foundation for further training and helping you determine whether this is the right career path for you. Facilitate and model the use of communication aids, including PECS, visual timetables, objects of reference, and other specialist tools. Encourage the development of expressive and receptive language through structured activities, play-based learning, and daily routines. Adapt tasks to support pupils with non-verbal communication or high levels of support needs. Promote social communication, turn-taking, joint attention, and interaction skills in both 1:1 and group contexts. Contribute to implementing communication-focused strategies recommended by therapists. Support pupils affected by trauma or communication-related frustration by using calm, consistent, and nurturing approaches. Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, SENCOs, and external professionals to ensure holistic support. Monitor pupils’ progress, record observations, and share insights with staff and families. Help maintain a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment.
