Job summary To deliver specialised Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy as part of the Macmillan Therapy Inpatient Team.
To holistically review the therapy needs of a malignant and non-malignant palliative patient group within the Trust hospitals.In addition to the clinical aspects of the role: the post-holder will have the opportunity to develop management, leadership and service improvement experience.You will be given opportunities to develop your clinical knowledge and skills, staff management skills and leadership/service improvement skills.You will be supported with regular learning and development opportunities both internally and externally as well as being provided with regular supervision and appraisal.You will manage a specialist caseload ensuring efficiency and effectiveness in palliative rehabilitation and discharge planning alongside an excellent multidisciplinary team including qualified Occupational Therapists and Therapy Support Workers.This role is predominantly based at Heartlands and Good Hope Hospital.
UHB is a multi-site organisation therefore you may be required to work at any of the Trust sites.
You may need to change your normal place of work, either temporarily or on a permanent basis because of development or reorganisation of Trust services.To contribute to and undertake a 7-day working programme and respiratory on-call service (Physiotherapist) across the Trust as required.
Main duties of the job To perform specialist assessment of patients with diverse presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions.
Access to advice and support from senior therapy staff is available if required, clinical work is not routinely evaluated.To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner and maintain associated records.To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of patients in your care.
Organising and planning own caseload to meet service and patient priorities.
Readjusting plans as situations change/arise.To undertake a comprehensive assessment of patients including those with diverse or complex presentations/multi pathologies; use advanced clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques to provide an accurate diagnosis of their condition and / or problems.To formulate and deliver an individual therapy treatment programme based on sound knowledge of evidence-based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment skills manual therapy techniques, patient education, exercise classes and alternative options.To take delegated responsibility from the Band 7 Therapist for managing patients with complex palliative conditions and be responsible for providing specialist therapy assessment and treatment plans for patients with these malignant and non-malignant conditions.

*Current registration with The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
*A levels or equivalent qualification.
*Good standard of general education including GCSE maths and English grade C and above.
*Evidence of CPD including recent post graduate training relevant to clinical speciality.
Desirable *Evidence of leadership training.
*Attendance at a Clinical Educators Course.
*Member of RCOT/CSP.
*Member of RCOT/CSP specialist interest group.
Experience Essential *Demonstrates comprehensive clinical experience enabling the post holder to manage a caseload of patients with complex needs in this speciality.
*Specialist clinical knowledge of Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy in Oncology and Palliative Care.
*Significant experience of working in an acute hospital.
Including a good understanding of working in an acute NHS trust.
*Experience of team/service development.
*Experience of supporting and supervising junior therapists, student therapists and assistants.
*Specialist knowledge across a range of therapy practices, routine and non-routine, requiring expertise within the clinical area.
*Understanding of current legislation and application to Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy.
Desirable *Palliative Care Accredited Courses ECEPC.
*Worked within NHS Healthcare.
Additional Criteria Essential *Highly developed physical skills including dexterity, co-ordination & sensory skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients.
*Excellent written and verbal communication skills including an ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive and contentious information.
*An ability to prioritise and organise own workload.
*An ability to cope with a range of complex scenarios: find solutions, analyse, compare and decide on appropriate course of action.
*An ability to be flexible and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
*IT skills -- computer literate Desirable *Further education within specialist area Fatigue, Anxiety and Breathlessness training.
*Facilitated or led a patient programme therapy group
