Job summary Providing General surgical services to King's Mill and Newark Hospital with two dedicated inpatient wards at King's Mill to cover all aspects of General surgery.
A Day Case Unit and Surgical Assessment Unit provides 24 hour care for surgical admissions and emergencies.
Several dedicated General surgical theatres and an emergency theatre shared with other surgical specialties.We are a committed and enthusiastic department providing surgical cover and a special interest, as well as general surgery.
The General Surgical Teams have good working relationships with Gastroenterology Consultants and surgical colleagues at the regional gastro-oesophageal and hepatobiliary/pancreatic cancer (Nottingham University Hospitals) centres and colorectal surgery at NUH.This appointment supports the expansion of our surgical same day admission unit.
Main duties of the job The over-riding purpose is to support the provision of the highest quality patient care through personal actions andcontinuous improvement.- Provision of a service to Sherwood Forest Hospitals, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment ofillness, and the proper functioning of the department.- The post holder is expected to contribute towards the teaching and training of medical students.- Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences.- Responsibilities for carrying out teaching duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate andcontinuing medical education activity.- Participating in medical audit, the Trust's Clinical Governance processes and in CPD - CPD is provided in job plans andattendance at audit and other governance meetings is mandatory.- The post holder must at all times carry out his/her duties with due regard to the Trust's Equal Opportunities Policy.- It is the responsibility of all employees to comply with Trust Health and Safety policies and maintain a safe and healthyenvironment for patients, visitors and staff.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential Full registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) MBBS or equivalent Desirable FRCS Experience Essential Current experience of working within the NHS Must have completed at least 4 years full time postgraduate training at least 2 of which must be in General Surgery Desirable Five years supervised training in an appropriate SpR equivalent training programme JAG accreditation in endoscopy Independent experience of operating, particularly "hot" cholecystectomies Management & Administrative Experience Essential Understanding of the current structure of Health services Desirable Familiar with the recent initiatives and changes in NHS Teaching Desirable A demonstrable interest in teaching Evidence of teaching medical students, nursing or paramedical staf Research Essential Able to appraise research Understanding of Evidence Based Medicine Understanding of the principles of medical audit and clinical governance Completed at least one audit project related to General Surgery Other Essential Good communicator, verbal and written Caring attitude to patients Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and cooperate with all staff Professional attitude towards work Prepared to work flexibly Ability to organise and manage priorities Commitment to continuing medical education Desirable Self-motivated Familiarity with IT and computer skills
