Job summary Acute medicine has an exciting post for a Trust Doctor looking for experience in acute care, offering an excellent learning opportunity.
The post is fixed term for 4 months commencing in December 2024.
Main duties of the job Acute Medicine at the Royal United Hospital centres around a 13 bedded direct GP assessment area (DAA) and a 25-bedded Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), located next to and operating closely with the Emergency Department.
In addition to the MAU and DAA, the acute medicine team are also responsible for patients in the 18-bedded Medical Short Stay ward (MSS), and a busy ambulatory care/SDEC area.
There is day-to-day supervision by the Consultants in Acute Medicine.
15 SHOs/F2s and 1 F1 are assigned to the acute medicine team at any one time; this team manages the acute take from Monday to Friday and also provides ward cover for all medical patients in the hospital overnight with assistance from the ward based medical teams.Emergency admissions between 8am and 5pm are managed by the Acute Physicians.
Out of hours emergency admissions are managed by 24 general medical consultants (which includes the Acute Physicians).
Frail elderly patients are managed by the Frailty Flying Squad, MNPs and Care of the Elderly consultants.
The on-take Specialist Registrar is responsible for running the integrated 'take' and works with the acute medicine team.The team works a full shift pattern to provide cover for the medical take and wards supported by the ward medical teams.

Job description Job responsibilities The post holder will be required to work clinical for Acute Medicine taking part on the acute medical on call rota.Should the applicant want to pursue a specialty interest alongside Acute Medicine then the department could look to provide sessional work to support this.
Person Specification Qualification Essential MBBS or equivalent medical qualification ALS Training in the initial assessment and care of the acutely ill patient.
Desirable Experience in an acute speciality at SHO level (or equivalent outside UK) MRCP Clinical Skills and Technical Skills Essential Knowledge of own limitations Evidence of experience in a range of acute medical specialties, with experience of managing patients on unselected medical take during core training or equivalent Good general medical knowledge and ability To work at SHO level Demonstrates awareness of the basics of managing acute medical conditions, including emergencies, in patients and out patients Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems Able to work without direct supervision where appropriate Able to prioritise clinical need Able to maximise safety and minimise risk Desirable Evidence of skills in the management of patients not requiring hospital admission
