About the Role

The successful candidate will work closely with the Acute Oncology ANP and various members of the Acute Oncology service based at RBH and PHT sites, including Acute Oncology & CUP Cancer Nurse Specialists and the haematology and oncology medical and nursing teams on the Haematology and Oncology Day Unit (HODU) at Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Oncology Assessment Unit (OAU) and Dorset Cancer Centre (DCC) at Poole Hospital.

The Acute Oncology Nurses will work very closely with all staff involved in the care of cancer patients, including Oncologists, Haematologists, AMU, Emergency Department & the Cancer & Palliative Care MDT members. The Acute Oncology Team liaise closely with both tertiary & primary care partners.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of evidenced-based nursing care which may include outreach into the community as required.
  2. Demonstrate effective time management and organisation skills to ensure patients are seen within the required time frame with the support of the Acute Oncology Nurses and the Clinical/Medical Oncologists who provide sessional support to the service.
  3. Support the Acute Oncology Team (AOT) to deliver the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) for relevant cancer patients in line with national guidance and the requirements of the Quality Assurance Process.
  4. Work in partnership with other key staff within the AOS including Oncologists, Haematologists, and Specialist Palliative Care Teams, all cancer MDTs, Emergency Departments and AMUs.
  5. Help to plan, deliver and evaluate specialist programmes of education and training to all grades of staff throughout the Trust, primary care settings and to patients as appropriate.
  6. Support the Acute Oncology team to develop and evaluate the provision of clinical audit programs and clinical guidelines that ensure the effectiveness of AOS using appropriate research.
Person Specification
  • Registration on Part 1 or 12 of NMC Register (RGN or RN Adult)
  • Degree in relevant health related subject
  • Recognised SACT chemotherapy course
Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years post-registration experience
  • Minimum of 2 years in related speciality at previous grade
  • Acute Oncology including Oncology/Haematology emergencies
Technical Skills
  • Decision making skills - clinical and non-clinical
  • Flexibility/Adaptability to be able to work across the Directorate as required to meet patient needs
  • Advanced communication skills - written and verbal including public speaking and report writing
Knowledge
  • To have in-depth knowledge of systemic anti-cancer Treatments and the administration of these.
  • Extensive knowledge of acute oncology emergencies and care
