About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Interim Head of Legal Services and Policy to join our team at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate will provide expert legal and practical advice to the Trust, ensuring consistent management and professional leadership of the Legal Services department. This will include supervision and line management of the Legal Team, as well as providing advice and training on specialist litigation issues.

The role requires the ability to clearly communicate complex and sensitive information in a demanding environment, with excellent time management, prioritisation, professionalism, and pragmatism.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Ensure consistent management and professional leadership of the Trust's Legal Services department.
  2. Provide advice and training on specialist litigation issues.
  3. Advising the organisation on interpreting law and cases when managing/responding to legal claims.
  4. Maintain high professional standards and actively seek opportunities to develop self and others within the Legal Team.
  5. Be professionally responsible for own workload and workload of the Legal Team, including ongoing prioritisation of workload.
  6. Work within Trust policies and procedures.

Person Specification
  • Management qualification or previous role in management.
  • Degree in Law (or other degree with completion of relevant conversion course).
  • Admission as Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales.
  • Postgraduate degree in Medical Law or Medical Law and Ethics.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of complex healthcare/or other complex organisational environments including across functional boundaries.
  • Communication planning.
  • Knowledge of Datix case management system or familiar.
Experience
  • Experience preferably in defendant in clinical negligence litigation.
  • Experience in attending inquests and conducting advocacy.
  • Experience of healthcare advisory e.g.: consent/ capacity/ confidentiality.
  • Previous experience of High Court matters.
  • Experience in risk management and working closely with Governance Teams.
  • Previous experience of working in-house.
