Job Title: Elective Orthopaedic Surgery Ward Lead

About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Elective Orthopaedic Surgery Ward Lead to join our team at George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust. As a key member of our clinical leadership team, you will be responsible for the clinical leadership and direction of Florence Nightingale ward, including the elective orthopaedic surgery enhanced care area.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Take responsibility for the clinical leadership and direction of Florence Nightingale ward, including the elective orthopaedic surgery enhanced care area.
  • Undertake and document comprehensive, systematic, and accurate nursing assessments of patients as appropriate.
  • Deliver high standards of nursing care based on best practice to maintain patient safety and provide a good patient experience.
  • Create and utilize opportunities to promote health and well-being of patients in their care.
  • Work within the NMC Guidelines and Trust Policies, recognizing one's own abilities and limitations.
  • Facilitate and build team working between nurses and multi-disciplinary teams to effect high standards of care.
  • Understand mortality data and use knowledge of how nursing can contribute to determining ward standards.
  • Use audit tools to monitor compliance with those standards.
  • Maintain good standards of communication with the multi-disciplinary team and respect the confidentiality of patients, relatives, and colleagues.

Managerial Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Matron to review staffing requirements using a proactive approach to retention and recruitment of staff.
  • Support the Matron to initiate and prioritize modernization developments within the Service as part of the business/strategic planning process.
  • Ensure staffing levels within the area are adequate to provide safe and effective care delivery.
  • Maximize resources available with e-rostering compliance.
  • Create an environment for partnership working and dissemination of information across multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Manage financial resources for the ward area as delegated by the Matron.
  • Participate in the on-site Senior Nurse Rota, supporting the wider Trust if necessary.
  • Support the Matron in the recruitment and selection of new staff.
  • Lead the investigation of complaints and clinical incidents related to own clinical area and support the review of complaints in other areas as deemed appropriate by the Matron.
  • Provide feedback to staff as appropriate.
  • Deputize for the Matron in their absence as requested.

Education and Training:

  • Undertake annual reviews of education requirements of the ward team and develop training plans to submit to the Matron.
  • Ensure own competence and own personal development plan is reviewed and discussed with the Matron annually.
  • Plan and implement training sessions within the ward environment, evaluating effectiveness within clinical care to patients using appropriate audit tools.
  • Ensure each team member has an annual appraisal and personal development plan.
  • Ensure annual attendance of self and staff at mandatory training sessions, keeping records of attendance.
  • Create a learning environment that supports and facilitates learning and structured personal development for all staff and learners.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Act as an ambassador for the clinical environment and the Trust, promoting a professional image of nursing.
  • Ensure current registration of all qualified staff at recruitment and during employment in line with Trust Policy.
  • Ensure current registration with NMC.

Person Specification:

Qualifications and Professional Training:

  • Relevant current professional qualification Registered General Nurse.
  • Teaching/Leadership Qualification.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
  • Educated to degree level in Nursing.
  • Demonstrates experience within the strategic planning process.
  • Must hold a current NMC Professional Registration.

Experience and Knowledge:

  • Minimum of 2 years experience at band 6 in an acute clinical setting.
  • Ability to demonstrate clinical and professional knowledge.
  • Evidence of leadership and change management.
  • Evidence of managing own workload with excellent time management skills.
  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively manage resources.
  • Understanding of the principles of Clinical Governance.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proven advanced clinical knowledge and skills.
  • Excellent presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead and motivate staff.
  • Ability to facilitate change through personal development of staff.
  • Supporting quality monitoring processes.
  • Able to identify risks, potential risks, and advise on solutions to mitigate these.
  • Good IT skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • An understanding of organizational management issues.
