About the Role
The Combat Engineer is a highly skilled and versatile role within the New Zealand Defence Force, requiring expertise in various areas including explosives, bridge construction, demolition, field surveying, mine clearance, and more.
Key responsibilities include providing combat engineering support to the Army, maintaining the ability to move and manoeuvre on the battlefield without interference from hostile forces, and performing tasks such as gap crossing for Army assets and demolition.
Career Progression and Training
Successful enlistment into the Army leads to posting at Waiouru Army base for 16 weeks of basic military training, covering subjects like Organisation and Administration, Army Customs and Protocol, and Military Field Skills and Weapon Training.
Further training includes the Basic Combat Engineer Course, an eight-week course at the School of Military Engineering, Linton Military Camp, and the Field Engineer Progression Course, which delivers specialist skills training and qualifications in various areas.

Entry Requirements
To be eligible, candidates must meet citizenship and security requirements, be at least 17 years of age, have 3 years of secondary school, and be medically fit for service.
Depending on higher qualifications chosen, the return of service can be up to two years.
