About the Role

As a Gunner, you will be part of the New Zealand Defence Force, providing fire support in various environments. You will undergo training in the skills and strategy necessary for combat, before branching into Gunner, Infantry, or Armoured trades.

As a Gunner, you will be employed within an Offensive Support Battery, where you will learn to operate the L119 Light Gun and L16 Mortar. You will also train in combat and technical skills, including navigation, military communications, and combat first aid.

Within the Gunner trade, you will have the opportunity to specialise in one of three streams: Weapons, Command Systems, or Targeting. In the Weapons stream, you will learn to operate the L119 Light Gun and L16 Mortar, while in the Command Systems stream, you will learn to operate the in-service Indirect Fire Prediction Computer and military communications equipment.

In the Targeting stream, you will learn to operate independently in a forward position on the battlefield, providing intelligence and calling in fire missions. As a Gunner, you will have the opportunity to develop into a leader with a strong knowledge of indirect fire support.

Career Progression

As you progress in your career, you will cross-train within the weapons, command systems, and targeting specialisations. You will have the opportunity to develop into a leader with a strong knowledge of indirect fire support.

There are various career paths available to Gunners, including:

  • Weapon detachment commander
  • Command systems sergeant
  • Forward observers assistant

As a Gunner, you will have the opportunity to develop into a leader with a strong knowledge of indirect fire support.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the Gunner trade, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 17 years of age
  • Meet the citizenship and security requirements to gain CV security clearance for this trade
  • Be medically fit for service
  • Colour perception restrictions apply
