About the Role

GKN Aerospace is seeking a highly skilled Senior Electromagnetic Design Engineer to join our innovative team. As a key member of our design office, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of flight through the design, development, prototyping, and testing of high-power, high-performance electrical machines and drive systems for future aircraft propulsion.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own the electromagnetic design and analysis of electric machines from requirements definition, through to concept, detail analysis, test and verification
  • Provide engineering analysis and first principle calculations in support of your electromagnetic designs or in order to validate peers results
  • Lead the selection of electrical machine type, topology, sizing to support high level requirements
  • Support technical discussions with customers during RFI phase and during the programme development, as well as other business development activities
  • Lead and support 'hands on' development activities of electromagnetic materials and novel design solutions in the workshop
  • Liaise with suppliers and partners in support of the design and development of electric propulsion systems
  • Lead capability development in electromagnetic simulation and support testing activities to ensure end to end verification processes
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for technical innovation and intellectual property (IP) development, publication and conferences
  • Generate technical reports and presentations to support technical reviews and TRL gates
  • Support robust forward planning of technical work in the design office and workshop activities in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team
Requirements
  • Experience of electromagnetic design of electric machines
  • In-depth experience in the use of electromagnetic and thermal modelling simulation tools (eg Comsol, Simcenter, ANSYS Maxwell and MotorCAD)
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles for electromagnetic design and analysis, and experience generating first principles calculations
  • Good understanding of motor control and power electronics engineering principles applied to the design and interactions with electrical machines
  • Knowledge of materials and effects of properties in the design and analysis of electric machines
  • Experience with FMEAs and safety critical engineering practices
  • Experience in the design of PMSM, IM, SynR and any other high performance topologies for electric machines in traction/propulsion applications
