Job Description

The role of a Clinical Extern at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton is to develop and consolidate competencies in a clinical environment, working as part of an interprofessional team to provide patient-centred care under direct or indirect supervision.

In this dynamic position, you will have the opportunity to practice in a hospital setting, gaining valuable patient care experience and building connections within an interprofessional environment. Successful candidates may be considered for career opportunities upon graduation and licensure.

  • Must be enrolled in nursing, paramedic, undergraduate medical, respiratory therapy, occupational therapy, or physiotherapy programs.
  • Current certificate in BLS and completion of orientation and mandatory training.
  • Good academic standing, successful learning experiences, and ability to communicate confidentially and professionally.
  • Ability to work as a team member, request guidance, and demonstrate critical thinking skills.

Responsibilities include practicing under supervision, carrying out or assisting with activities of daily living, and providing patient care activities such as mobility assistance, skin integrity measures, and vital signs.

  • Areas of hire include General Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Emergency Department, and more.
  • Rotating shifts, including days, evenings, nights, and weekends, with a minimum requirement of one 12-hour shift per week or two 8-hour shifts per week.
