Position Overview

The Histopathology Services at North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust operates from a well-equipped laboratory that handles a significant volume of histology and cytology requests annually. The facility is accredited and licensed to conduct post-mortem examinations and body storage, ensuring compliance with national standards.

Our team comprises experienced Consultant Histopathologists, supported by a Specialty Doctor, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment. The service is recognized for its high standards and effective management of workloads, with additional support available for consultants to maintain efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Histopathology Duties

Consultants are expected to manage a diverse range of histology requests, ensuring timely and accurate reporting. The laboratory employs advanced technology for immunohistochemistry and rapid processing, enhancing diagnostic capabilities.

  • Annual workload includes:
  • Endoscopic Biopsies
  • Colectomies
  • Skin Specimens
  • Breast Core Biopsies
  • Breast Resections
  • Cervical Biopsies
  • Liver Biopsies
  • Renal Biopsies

Approximately 85% of cases originate from hospital settings, with the remainder from primary care providers.

Non-Gynaecological Cytology

The role also encompasses non-gynae cytology, with a focus on delivering high-quality diagnostic services. The majority of specimens are sourced from hospital wards and clinics, with a structured rota for efficient processing.

About the Organization

The position includes a discretionary recruitment premium, which is pensionable and subject to annual review. Relocation assistance may be available for candidates moving to the area.

  • Qualifications
    • FRCPath or equivalent qualification
    • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a valid license to practice

    • Experience in non-gynae cytology, including fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures
