British American Tobacco is seeking a highly motivated and talented undergraduate student to join our Research and Development function in Southampton as an Undergraduate Intern – Strategic Flavour Innovation. This exciting opportunity is part of our 12-month undergraduate placement scheme, which offers a unique chance to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic and innovative industrial setting.

About the Role

As a Strategic Flavour Innovation Intern, you will be working closely with our experienced team to design and conduct experiments, develop new flavour materials and technologies, and assess their fit across our product categories. You will have the opportunity to work on a broad spectrum of scientific fields, including flavour chemistry, neuroscience, sensory science, and analytical chemistry.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and conduct experiments to identify new flavour materials and technologies
  • Deliver scientific workstreams to assess the fit of new flavour concepts across our product categories
  • Process data and conduct statistical analysis to inform flavour innovation decisions
Requirements
  • Currently working towards an undergraduate degree in Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Experimental or Biological Psychology, Psychology with Neuroscience, or Natural Sciences
  • Awareness of the application of scientific principles in chemistry with good lab practice understanding
  • Motivation to learn about taste and smell recognition, working with flavour materials, and developing early prototypes
  • Scientific curiosity and critical thinking to drive experimentation and lead your own project
  • Collaborative attitude and ability to communicate with both specialist and non-specialist audiences
