Transformative Opportunity in Flavour Innovation

British American Tobacco is seeking an exceptional undergraduate student to join our Research and Development function in Southampton, UK, as an Undergraduate Intern in Strategic Flavour Innovation. This 12-month placement offers a unique chance to contribute to the development of innovative flavour materials and technologies, driving the company's mission to decrease the health impact of the industry.

About the Role

This role is an exciting opportunity for students pursuing a degree in Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Experimental or Biological Psychology, Psychology with Neuroscience, or Natural Sciences. As an Undergraduate Intern, you will be part of our Strategic Flavour Innovation Team, working on flavour innovations across our product portfolio. Your responsibilities will include designing experiments, conducting lab-based research, delivering scientific workstreams, identifying opportunities for novel flavour concepts, and processing data for statistical analysis.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and conduct experiments to identify new flavour materials and technologies
  • Deliver scientific workstreams involving flavour chemistry, neuroscience, sensory science, and analytical chemistry
  • Identify opportunities for novel flavour concepts and assess their fit across our product categories
  • Process data and conduct statistical analysis
Requirements
  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Experimental or Biological Psychology, Psychology with Neuroscience, or Natural Sciences
  • Awareness of the application of scientific principles in chemistry with good lab practice understanding
  • Motivation to learn about taste and smell recognition, working with flavour materials, and developing early prototypes
  • Scientific curiosity and critical thinking to drive experimentation and lead projects
  • Collaborative attitude and ability to communicate with specialist and non-specialist audiences
  • Willingness and ability to adapt quickly to change
