Special Needs Teaching Assistant Role

GSL Education is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Needs Teaching Assistant to make a positive impact on students' lives in an extraordinary Secondary School in York, North Yorkshire.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Under the guidance of a certified teacher, conduct learning activities tailored to meet the needs of students with special needs.
  • Collaborate with the teacher to create and assess specialized learning activities, and prepare reports and records as needed.
  • Work with students on care or therapy plans created and overseen by a care specialist or therapist.
  • Encourage students to collaborate and communicate with each other, and involve every student in activities.
  • Participate in creating, organizing, and carrying out students' individual development plans, which may include scheduling, attending, and contributing to evaluations.
  • Monitor students' behavior and conduct, and take action to address any complex, challenging issues.
Requirements:
  • Must hold the Right to Work in the UK.
  • Relevant qualifications in education or SEN support, such as a Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant qualification.
  • Training in behavior management and de-escalation techniques is desirable.
  • Experience working with children who have various disabilities and/or learning difficulties, or a willingness to undergo training.
  • Knowledge of different additional needs, such as ASC, ADHD, MLD, and SEMH.
  • Confident in delivering pre-planned lessons and interventions.
  • Hold a Child-only DBS registered to the update service or be willing to apply for one through GSL Education.

Please note that this role requires a strong knowledge and understanding of safeguarding and child protection, and successful applicants must satisfy all background safer recruitment checks, including an enhanced DBS on the update service.
