Job Title: Director

The Director is responsible for providing active leadership and effective management of the Charles Dickens Museum and its staff.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop and implement the Museum's strategic plan, ensuring alignment with its mission and vision.
  • Lead fundraising efforts from trusts, foundations, public funders, and individual donors to support the Museum's programs and initiatives.
  • Oversee marketing, press, and public relations to promote the Museum and its collections.
  • Identify and pursue commercial opportunities to generate revenue and support the Museum's financial sustainability.

Management and Governance:

  • Ensure the smooth operation of the Museum, adhering to accreditation requirements and health and safety legislation.
  • Oversee the care and development of the Museum's historic buildings and collections.
  • Provide strong leadership and management to the staff team, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.
  • Develop and implement effective staff policies, ensuring compliance with employment legislation.

Financial Management:

  • Develop and manage the Museum's budget, ensuring financial sustainability and growth.
  • Oversee the presentation of regular financial reports to the Board and the Finance and Operations Committee.
  • Work with the Museum's auditors to ensure the timely and compliant production of annual accounts and returns to the Charity Commission and Companies House.

External Relations:

  • Act as an ambassador for the Museum, representing it in media and public relations opportunities.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with key stakeholders, partners, and networks, both locally and internationally.

Person Specification:

The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in the cultural sector, with a proven track record in income generation, fundraising, and strategic leadership. They will have strong commercial acumen, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to build rapport with a wide range of stakeholders. A commitment to equality, equity, diversity, and inclusion is essential.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience working in a museum or heritage context.
  • Experience managing historic or listed buildings.

Terms and Conditions:

This is a full-time permanent contract, with a salary in the range of £60,000-£65,000 per annum, depending on experience. The successful candidate will be required to work 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with some evening, weekend, and public holiday work may be required. The Museum offers a 25-day annual leave entitlement, plus 8 statutory public holidays, and a pension scheme.
