Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Anaesthetic Consultant to join our team at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high-quality anaesthetic services and perioperative care to patients within our catchment area.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide anaesthetic services and perioperative care to patients within our catchment area.
  • Contribute to the development of anaesthetic services and perioperative medicine within the Trust.
  • Lead developments in anaesthetic services and perioperative medicine within the Trust.
  • Maintain and promote multi-disciplinary team work within the specialty and those associated with critical care services.
  • Take an active part in the formal teaching and practical training and supervision of junior staff.
  • Assume responsibility for professional supervision and management of non-consultant grade medical staff.
  • Concern themselves with the professional development, both clinical and personal, of their trainees.
  • Take part in risk management, governance activities, and other activities in the directorate.
  • Take part in continuing medical education activities in line with the Royal College of Anaesthetists' guidelines.
  • Participate in the consultant anaesthetists on-call rota, including providing cross-cover for annual and study leave.
  • Provide leadership for the proper function of the services in their charge in line with agreed policies of the Trust.
  • Assume corporate and individual responsibility for the management of the junior medical staff.
Requirements
  • CCT (or equivalent) with entry on Specialist Register for Anaesthesia or within six months of anticipated CCT date on the date of interview.
  • Additional degree or post-graduate qualification (MRCP, MD etc).
  • Post-graduate prizes.
  • Advanced training in perioperative medicine or equivalent.
  • Higher training in general, urological, and gynaecological surgery, obstetric anaesthesia, anaesthesia for day case head and neck and maxillofacial surgery, and anaesthesia for orthopaedic surgery including regional anaesthesia and paediatric anaesthesia.
  • Advanced Life support (ALS).
  • Advanced training in cardiopulmonary exercise testing, orthopaedics, and/or regional anaesthesia, general, urological, and gynaecological surgery, paediatric anaesthesia, and ATLS/APLS.
  • Relevant medical experience outside anaesthesia.
  • Active regular participation in teaching and training of medical and para-medical colleagues.
  • Active consistent engagement with clinical audit and quality improvement.
  • Extensive/formal experience in medical education including regional teaching.
  • Life support course instructor.
  • Clear understanding of local/wider NHS management structures.
  • Awareness of ethical and legal issues.
  • Leadership in evidence-based transformation of patient care.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
