Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced consultant to join our progressive team of intensivists and allied professionals in Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. The successful candidate will have a special interest in Intensive Care Medicine and an associated speciality in Anaesthetics, Emergency Medicine or any other compatible Medical base specialty.

Main Duties of the Job

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a high standard of care to patients in our critical care units, which are consistently amongst the best performing in the UK. The Intensive Care team is a multidisciplinary consultant body comprising of consultants in critical care and other specialties, with great relationships with other directorates within the trust.

The new appointee will join a team of 14 Critical Care Consultants in total, who are responsible for the Trust's two critical care units. There are excellent opportunities to develop personal interests including echocardiography, research, governance, outreach and ICU follow-up.

Working for Our Organisation

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust provides general hospital services to a population of approximately 480,000 in West Kent and North East Sussex, and some specialist services to a considerably larger population. Around 120,000 new patients present each year to the A&E departments. Our major hospitals are the Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury and Maidstone Hospital.

The Trust's Headquarters are at Maidstone Hospital. We have a strong commitment to education and training, with close clinical and academic ties with local medical schools. Successful applicants will be able to participate in teaching both under and postgraduate students associated with these Universities.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have:

  • MB BS (or equivalent)
  • Registered with GMC
  • On the specialist register, or within 6 months of acquiring CCT
  • Must have completed intermediate or Step 1 training in ICM or equivalent and eligible for Associate Fellowship FICM

Desirable criteria include:

  • FRCA or equivalent, or a second registered specialty to complement the trusts requirements
  • CCT in ICM as described by the Faculty of intensive care medicine (or evidence of equivalent levels of experience/training)
  • FFICM examination or other higher professional qualification
  • ALS/APLS/ATLS or NLS provider or instructor
Research

The successful candidate will have an understanding of general principles, scientific method and interpretation of literature. Evidence of personal research projects and their presentation, as well as publications in peer-reviewed journals, are desirable.

Audit

The ideal candidate will understand the principles of audit and have evidence of participation and completion of audit projects particularly relating to ICU. Completed the audit loop in a number of audits is desirable.

Personal Skills

The successful candidate will have evidence of good communication skills. To have undertaken a postgraduate communication skills course is desirable.

Management

The ideal candidate will have evidence of organisational ability. Attended a National Health Service Management Course appropriate to Consultant duties is desirable.
