About the Role:

Leonardo is a global leader in defence electronics, delivering systems for situational awareness, electronic defence, and surveillance across land, sea, and air. We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our team in Edinburgh, where our Radar and Advanced Targeting line of business is uniquely positioned as one of the world's top designers, developers, and manufacturers of radars, lasers, and infrared countermeasure systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design and development of world-leading radar and electro-optic products, utilizing state-of-the-art methods, technology, and tools.
  • Interface with customers (internal and external) on design aspects and liaise closely with Engineers from other disciplines, particularly Systems and Electronics.
  • Present robust engineering solutions at design and peer reviews to ensure technical accuracy of specifications, designs, and reports.
  • Design innovative, optimized engineering solutions taking into account all requirements such as product quality, safety, reliability, and testability.
  • Perform 'hands on' mechanical design and development using 3D CAD software, including 'first-pass' structural analysis to determine if a design is fit for purpose.
  • Deliver design solutions against requirements, within budget and timescales.
  • Seek and share good practice and knowledge locally to continuously improve own practices.
  • Champion improvements in product manufacturability through effective relationship building and design guidance.
  • Build effective cross-functional relationships within local site, across business, and internationally within group and suppliers.
  • Continue professional development throughout your career by formal training, learning 'on the job,' and keeping up to date with the latest developments which may aid performance.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of an upper second-class Master's Honours degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent job-related experience.
  • Working towards Chartered Engineer with IMechE or equivalent. Alternatively, possessing and demonstrating many of the UK-SPEC competencies necessary in obtaining Chartered status with the IMechE in the next 2 years.
  • Problem-solving and simultaneous engineering – a structured, logical approach to investigate issues and problems in an effective cross-functional manner.
  • Mechanical engineering detailed design – first-hand experience of engineering design, numerical calculations, tolerance studies, etc.
  • Customer orientation – demonstrating the ability to fulfill customer requirements (internal and/or external).
  • Business awareness – understanding of fundamental business principles, drivers, and key customers.
  • Self-motivated and willing to take on new challenges.
