Research Scientist: Investigating Antibiotic Resistance Mechanisms
3 weeks ago
About Queen Mary University of London
We are a leading research-intensive university with a strong commitment to excellence and innovation. Our School of Biological & Behavioural Sciences is one of the largest Schools within the University, and we offer a lively, stimulating environment for both staff and students.
Job Description
This position is available in the Department of Biological Sciences. We are seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to join our team and contribute to our research project entitled 'Alteration in bacterial cell envelope structure as the mechanism of antibiotic resistance and cell death'. The successful candidate will work closely with Dr Nikola Ojkic and other team members to investigate the physical mechanism of how antibiotic treatments ultimately lead to bacterial cell death.
The role involves using imaging, image analysis, mathematical modelling, and stochastic molecular dynamics simulations to gain insights into the complex interactions between antibiotics and bacterial cells. You will be responsible for collecting and analysing data, presenting findings at national and international conferences, and collaborating with other researchers to develop new ideas and techniques.
Skills and Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will have a PhD in physics/biophysics/mathematics/bioengineering/bioinformatics/computational science or a related field. You should have significant experience in programming languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB, and be familiar with image analysis software packages like ImageJ or Fiji. Experience with stochastic simulations and mathematical modelling is highly desirable.
You will also need excellent communication skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and a track record of publications. As this is a fixed-term contract, you will be required to submit regular progress reports and participate in departmental meetings.
Benefits
As a member of our team, you will receive a competitive salary of £35,000 - 45,000 per annum, depending on your experience and qualifications. You will also be entitled to 30 days' leave per annum, access to a pension scheme, and a season ticket loan scheme. Our University offers a range of benefits to support your well-being and career development, including enhanced family-friendly leave, flexible working arrangements, and training opportunities.
We value diversity and inclusion and welcome applications from candidates from diverse backgrounds. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment that promotes equality, diversity, and respect for all staff and students.
