We are seeking a highly skilled Scientific Research Fellow to contribute to our groundbreaking research in leukaemia and cancer biology at the University of Glasgow. As part of our esteemed team, you will have the opportunity to make a significant impact in this field by advancing our understanding of the bone marrow niche's role in stem cell regulation, metastatic evolution, and cancer dormancy.

About the Role

This full-time position is available for an initial period until 4th February 2029, with the possibility of extension or renewal based on performance and funding availability. The salary range is £33,232 - £45,163 per annum, commensurate with experience. You will be working under the guidance of Professor Helen Wheadon and Professor Mhairi Copland, leading experts in their fields.

Main Responsibilities

As a Scientific Research Fellow, your primary duties will include:
1. Planning, conducting, and coordinating research projects related to leukaemia and cancer biology
2. Collaborating with colleagues to design experiments, collect and analyse data, and prepare research publications
3. Developing and implementing advanced hydrogel systems to study normal haemopoietic stem cells, pre-leukaemic HSCs, and leukaemic stem cells
4. Validating the bone marrow niche model, testing chemotherapeutic drugs, and performing biological assays to characterise normal, pre-malignant, and malignant samples
5. Presenting research findings at international and national conferences, seminars, colloquia, and workshops to enhance our research profile

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must possess the following qualifications, skills, and experience:
1. A strong background in haematology, leukaemia research, bioengineering, or a related field, preferably with a PhD (Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12) or equivalent professional qualifications and experience
2. Excellent knowledge of flow cytometry, fluorescent microscopy, 3D culture systems, spheroid/organoid culture, mammalian cell culture, and experimental techniques such as immunofluorescent imaging, western blotting, molecular biology, qRT-PCR, sequencing, proteomics, and Luminex
3. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including public presentations, ability to communicate complex data/concepts clearly, and a collegiate approach
4. Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines while maintaining high-quality output
5. Experience with project management, budgeting, and people management is desirable
