Job Title: Healthcare Research Scientist

We are seeking a highly skilled and enthusiastic Biomedical/Healthcare Scientist to join our Clinical Services Unit. The Unit delivers high throughput serological and molecular testing of a wide range of viral and bacterial pathogens.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Deliver technical and related services that meet clinical and scientific requirements, comply with best laboratory practices, and are safe, economical, and effective.
  2. Collaborate with colleagues across UKHSA to foster close working relationships between the clinical services unit and research and development groups to improve service provision.
  3. Support the provision of an efficient, effective, and timely service, ensuring maximum performance within allocated resources.
  4. Assist with the validation of patient results, ensuring assays reach quality control criteria and appropriate interpretations are made prior to medical sign off.
  5. Support the training of junior staff.
  6. Deputise for senior staff in the unit as required and where appropriate.
  7. Develop yourself and your team to support the work of CSU and to support national laboratory emergency response.
  8. Contribute to the proper storage and management of laboratory specimens.
  9. Contribute to internal and external quality assurance programmes.
Requirements:

You will be assessed on the following essential criteria:

  1. BSc in Biological sciences or equivalent qualification.
  2. Experience with quality assurance principles and procedures.
  3. Knowledge of laboratory safety requirements and procedures.
  4. Experience of working in a microbiological/molecular diagnostic (preferably virological) laboratory, or equivalent.
  5. Able to work carefully, with precision, and balance laboratory duties with accurate record keeping.
