Main Purpose of the Role

The Graduate Tutor is responsible for ensuring the effective learning of their assigned pupil, whether in a classroom setting or within the community. This role contributes to the wider success of the school by providing pastoral care and supporting the social and emotional progress of pupils.

Duties and Responsibilities

Set High Expectations

  • Establish a safe and stimulating environment for pupils, promoting mutual respect.
  • Set goals that stretch and challenge all pupils, demonstrating positive attitudes and values.

Promote Good Progress and Outcomes

  • Be accountable for the attainment, progress, and outcomes of assigned pupils.
  • Plan teaching to build on pupils' capabilities and prior knowledge, wrapping the curriculum around individual needs.
  • Guide pupils to reflect on their progress and emerging needs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how pupils learn and its impact on teaching.
  • Report and record pupil progress and results within the school's recording and reporting structure.

Demonstrate Good Subject and Curriculum Knowledge

  • Have a good knowledge of relevant subject(s) and curriculum areas, utilizing and maintaining pupils' interest.
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of developments in subject and curriculum areas.
  • Apply cross-curricular links in planning and teaching.

Plan and Teach Well-Structured Lessons

  • Impart knowledge and develop understanding through effective use of lesson time.
  • Promote a love of learning.
  • Reflect on the effectiveness of lessons and approaches to teaching.
  • Contribute to the design and provision of an engaging curriculum.

Adapt Teaching to Respond to Pupils' Needs

  • Differentiate teaching to meet the needs of all pupils.
  • Set clear learning objectives and update Individual Learning Programmes.
  • Be aware of factors that inhibit learning and adapt teaching accordingly.

Make Accurate and Productive Use of Assessment

  • Mark, assess, and return pupils' work, providing constructive feedback.
  • Use formative and summative assessment to secure pupils' progress.
  • Monitor progress, set targets, and plan subsequent lessons.

Manage Behaviour Effectively

  • Have clear rules and routines for behaviour, promoting good and courteous behaviour.
  • Lead by example, demonstrating positive behaviour and good manners.
  • Maintain good relationships with pupils, exercising appropriate authority.

Contribute to Self-Evaluation

  • Contribute to the completion of school evaluation processes.

Professional Development and Performance Appraisal

  • Attend CPD days and training as required.
  • Review own professional development and identify training needs.
  • Participate in the school's performance appraisal programme.
