Didcot, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom Diamond Light Source Full time
About the Role

The Diamond Detector Group is responsible for the design, installation, and operation of detector systems for the beamlines at Diamond. To achieve this, the group is committed to evaluating and developing new detector technologies, collaborating with international partners, and leveraging access to world-class facilities.

The availability of a test beamline at Diamond enables the detector group to evaluate the performance of innovative detector technologies and their application to synchrotron X-ray experiments. Close cooperation with the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory provides access to other world-class facilities and interaction with leading detector developers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and specification of detector systems for installation in beamlines.
  • Development and application of expertise in technologies such as sensors, detector read-out, and detector ancillary electronics for new detector design.
  • Collaboration with internal and external scientific and engineering staff to produce documentation for detector systems, calibration and maintenance programs, and quality control tests.
  • Fault finding of detector systems installed in beamlines.
  • Assistance in installation and commissioning of detector systems.
  • Data analysis using software packages such as MatLab and Origin to understand detector performance.
About You

Candidates will require a degree in physics or demonstrate significant equivalent experience. You will display knowledge or experience of the following:

  • The principles of radiation interaction with matter.
  • Ionizing radiation detector maintenance and operation.
  • Data analysis packages such as MatLab.
  • Electronic test equipment (DMMs, Oscilloscopes etc.).
  • X-ray spectroscopy detectors.
Benefits

Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 26 days annual leave, public holidays, 2 annual volunteering days, and flexible working hours. We also offer an excellent defined benefit pension scheme. Staff have access to a range of amenities on site, including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant, and sports and leisure facilities. A relocation allowance may be available where applicable.
