Job Summary

The Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Civil Service is the most senior civil servant in the UK, responsible for leading the Civil Service and advising the Prime Minister and Cabinet on key policy and delivery issues.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide strategic leadership to the Civil Service, ensuring it has the capability and capacity to deliver the Government's priorities and policies.
  2. Advise the Prime Minister and Cabinet on key policy and delivery issues, ensuring that the Government's mission-led approach to governing the UK is implemented effectively.
  3. Oversee the processes for collective agreement, propriety and ethics, and effective inter-departmental working, ensuring that the Civil Service is a modern, professional and digitally enabled organisation.
  4. Represent the Civil Service in all forums, including Parliament, and maintain strong relationships with overseas counterparts to ensure that the UK's interests are well-served.
  5. Develop and maintain a network of external stakeholders to support the Government's wider priorities and ensure that the Civil Service is able to draw on external expertise and advice where necessary.

To succeed in this role, you will need to demonstrate:

  1. Exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a large and complex organisation.
  2. A sharp intellect, combined with an understanding of the geopolitical and security challenges faced by the UK.
  3. Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to command credibility with senior politicians and colleagues across Whitehall.
  4. Well-developed political sensitivity, with the ability to secure the confidence of Ministers and key stakeholders.
  5. A track record of working with others to deliver common goals and objectives, coupled with an ability to build deep collaborative partnerships across Whitehall.
  6. A strong commitment to the Civil Service values of impartiality, honesty, integrity and objectivity.
Benefits

Alongside a salary of £200,000, Cabinet Office contributes £57,940 towards your being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme, which provides an attractive pension, benefits for dependants and employer contributions of 30 days of paid annual leave.
