Job Overview

We are seeking an exceptional Ward Clerk to join our Chemotherapy Unit team, providing exceptional patient care and support.

The ideal candidate will be a motivated and enthusiastic individual with excellent communication skills and a genuine interest in working with patients with cancer.

As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for maintaining accurate patient records, answering phone calls, and providing administrative support to the unit.

You will work closely with the team to ensure seamless delivery of patient care, and your ability to work independently and as part of a team will be essential in this role.

Main Duties of the Job

The successful candidate will be the first point of contact for patients on arrival to the unit, providing a warm and welcoming environment.

You will be responsible for maintaining patient information on the Patient Administration System, ensuring accurate and up-to-date records are kept.

Additionally, you will be responsible for answering the chemotherapy unit reception phone, answering patient queries, and signposting accordingly.

You will also work closely with the team to develop systems to promote efficient and effective working within the team.

Our team is led by a Senior Sister who is supported by her deputy, and we work closely with the Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment Clinical Nurse Specialist and her community team to develop an extended service.

Our oncology and haematology service consists of specialist Clinical Nurse Specialists who work closely with the Consultants and the Chemotherapy Nurses.

The delivery of chemotherapy, recognising side effects, and escalating and treating any problems appropriately are key aspects of this role.

Effective communication skills are essential in this role, and you will be required to work independently and as part of a team to deliver high-quality patient care.

Person Specification

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Significant and recent relevant experience with at least 1 year of experience of working in the NHS, Outpatients in particular
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office and Excel
  • Evidence of effective communication, including written, oral, and electronic communication with nursing and medical staff
  • Evidence of ability and flexibility to organise and respond quickly to changes, organising and prioritising workload to meet deadlines within the defined boundaries of the department
  • Demonstrate sympathetic understanding and empathy with cancer patients
  • Evidence of ability to work on own initiative but also as part of a team
  • Evidence of ability to develop systems to promote efficient and effective working within the team
