About the Role

The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced Commercial Director to lead the development and implementation of commercial strategies that support business growth and align with the Trust's ambitions. This is an influential role with significant responsibility and input into all aspects of the Trust's growth and service development strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain business and market intelligence infrastructures to identify and realise opportunities for service development and income generation.
  • Research, identify, evaluate, and recommend new business opportunities, negotiate terms of acquisition, and oversee implementation.
  • Lead the Trust's response to commercial tender opportunities, ensuring appropriate input from and collaboration with other Trust directorates.
  • Develop and maintain short- and medium-term strategies for business development and income generation at the Trust, using horizon scanning to identify areas of potential service growth and areas at risk from competition.
  • Support Executive Directors in developing business cases for development opportunities, setting out financial, workforce, and other resource requirements, option appraisals, and key risks (and mitigations).
  • Support and, where appropriate, lead commercial discussions with external partners/potential partners.
  • With the Chief Finance Officer, implement a clear process for developing, reviewing, and maximising the profitability of Trust services.

Requirements

  • Recent and relevant senior-level experience of leading a business development/contracts/performance function of relevant scale and complexity.
  • Knowledge of the NHS planning system, including the means by which resources are allocated and services are commissioned.
  • Proven record of contract negotiation in an NHS or similar setting.
  • Experience of formulating, communicating, and delivering business, operational, and organisation-wide development strategies.
  • Financially literate with the ability to critically review, challenge, and communicate a range of views on a wide range of complex issues using detailed analysis and detailed financial information and key performance indicators to influence decision making.
  • Experience of managing complex projects to successful conclusion.
  • Significant experience of staff management, including staff development, objectives setting, appraisals, etc.
  • Evidence of leading transformational change, re-design, and service improvement.
  • Experience of leading business discussions with external business partners.
  • Experience of contract negotiations and management around new business activities.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Good inter-personal skills enabling engagement with all levels across the Trust.
  • An experienced networker able to meaningfully connect with and influence the Board, the Executive, and senior managers.
  • Numerate, with an ability to analyse, interpret, and present complex information clearly to non-specialists.
  • IT skills ranging from Excel, PowerPoint, Word, to Pivot Tables, Access/Data Management, and Formulas, etc.
  • Well-developed report writing and business case skills.
  • The maturity to challenge ideas and balance opportunities and threats.
  • Horizon scanning and interpreting the changing approach to delivering safe patient services within an integrated care system (ICS) environment.
  • Has knowledge and understanding of how IT applications can be used effectively to help them and their team in the communication of complex information and analysis.
