Job Summary

Norfolk State University seeks an experienced academic leader to serve as the Chair of the Department of Computer Science. The successful candidate will have a strong track record of scholarly achievement, teaching, and service, as well as experience in academic program leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Curriculum oversight, program review, and assessment, including development, implementation, and evaluation of the computer science education program.
  • Faculty and staff workload assignment, including academic advising, teaching schedules, and committee assignments.
  • Course management, including editing and preparing course schedules.
  • Budget development and management in accordance with the University's Strategic Plan and as set forth by the Office of Planning and Budget.
  • Maintenance of personnel records of faculty and staff.
  • Evaluation of academic and professional faculty and departmental staff.
  • Oversight of departmental committees.
  • Report preparation and submission.
  • Compliance with accreditation standards and University, state, and federal regulations.
  • Departmental compliance with University policies and procedures.
  • Identification of program outcomes, in conjunction with departmental faculty, and providing evidence that graduates have attained those outcomes.
  • Infusion of technology and other instructional strategies into the curriculum.
  • Collaboration with area private, public, military, and academic partners to promote opportunities for faculty and students.
  • Participation in professional development activities.
  • Development and evaluation of student admission, progression, retention, and graduation policies within the framework of the controlling institution.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean, College of Science, Engineering and Technology.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidate must possess an earned doctorate in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Record of scholarly achievement in teaching, research, and service that merits tenure at the level of associate or full professor in Computer Science.
  • Demonstrated experience in academic program leadership showing increasing levels of responsibility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three or more years of experience in higher education.
  • Record of scholarly achievements and teaching effectiveness.
  • Substantial experience obtaining grants and contracts.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication (oral, written, and presentation) skills.
  • Personal research experience aligns well with the department initiatives and programs.
