Job Overview

The Theatre Health Care Assistant is a vital member of the theatre team, supporting Registered Nurses in delivering direct patient care. This role involves undertaking a range of activities under the supervision of a registered nurse, having been assessed and deemed competent in the required activities.

Main Duties
  • Support the registered nurse in implementing an agreed plan of care with the patient, in accordance with instructions and training received in Main and Day Treatment Theatres, Interventional radiology area, and Recovery.
  • Provide and maintain a high standard of total patient care at all times, ensuring the dignity and self-esteem of the patient is preserved.
  • Effectively communicate with the nursing team and members of the multi-disciplinary team, embracing the philosophy of the multi-disciplinary team and fostering working relationships at every opportunity.
  • Assist the Nurse in summoning help and collecting equipment in emergency situations, and be able to carry out basic life support.
  • Assist with the pre/peri/post anaesthetic/operative care of patients undergoing interventional and surgical procedures.
  • Assist the Registered Nurse/Theatre Team in moving, handling, and positioning patients to meet clinical needs, adhering to the Trust's Moving and Handling policy at all times.
  • Ensure all equipment is maintained in safe working order, demonstrate a thorough understanding of how to use the equipment safely and effectively, and report any maintenance required to the appropriate department for repair.

Education/Qualifications

  • NVQ2 or equivalent experience.
  • Key skills level 1 in literacy and numeracy.

Skills & Abilities

  • Communicates clearly in writing, verbally, electronically, and on the telephone.

  • Moving and handling of patients.
  • Hand hygiene.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Demonstrable experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a theatres setting.

  • Understands the importance of privacy and dignity.
  • Understanding of health and safety issues.
  • Understanding of stock control.
