Job Title: Theatre Operating Department Practitioner/Scrub Nurse

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Theatre Operating Department Practitioner/Scrub Nurse to join our team at Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital. As a key member of our perioperative team, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality patient care and contributing to the smooth operation of our theatres.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure safe and effective care for patients undergoing surgery, including pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care.
  • Manage the theatre team as a team leader, participating in the scrub and circulating team in a designated highly specialist area without supervision as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain effective communication and relationship skills to promote and maintain effective liaison throughout the Unit team and with the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Organise the multidisciplinary staff allocated to your control on a daily basis, ensuring the smooth and safe operation of the theatre list.
  • Be responsible for documenting and monitoring the safe use of all equipment, and economic use of supplies.
  • Enhance patient care by ensuring effective assessment of patients' needs, making complex decisions on issues surrounding surgical emergencies/problems requiring immediate action.
  • Support and reassure patients undergoing surgery with local and spinal anaesthesia, and deliver highly sensitive or unwelcome information in an appropriate and empathetic manner.
  • Responsible for ensuring correct provision of all cumulative parts of prosthesis implantation, pre-operatively, peri-operatively, and post-operatively.
  • Ensure personally that all Nursing & Midwifery Council, Healthcare Professions Council, and Continuing Professional Development requirements are met.
  • Take responsibility for developing the clinical skills of new and newly qualified staff within your area, acting as their mentor/preceptor.
  • Ensure Trust policies and procedures are met in relation to personal professional responsibilities, and ensure Unit policies and procedures are proposed and developed, documented, and adhered to.
  • Be responsible for ordering, storing, dispensing, and recording of drugs in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Participate in auditing, supporting, and implementing necessary changes and service improvements in the Unit.
  • Act as a link nurse, maintaining a learning environment for colleagues, and communicate efficiently and effectively with the multidisciplinary team, other departments within the Trust.
  • Responsible for the Department in the absence of your line manager, and perform any job-related duties not specifically enumerated in this job description which may be assigned by your Line Manager.
