Highways Driver Chargehand Role

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Highways Driver Chargehand to join our team at Totally Local Company. As a key member of our Highways department, you will play a crucial role in delivering minor civil engineering projects to predetermined plans, specifications, timescales, and budget.

Key Responsibilities

  • You will safely carry out repairs and improvements to various built environment infrastructure, including modular paving, kerb installation, bituminous macadam laying, concreting, pipe laying, hard and soft landscaping, and drainage repair.
  • You will apply safe methods of working through the use of PPE, correct manual handling, and the use of small plant and equipment such as excavators, roller/breaker, compaction equipment, dumpers, motorised circular saws, and other highways-related equipment.
  • You will adhere to the Health & Safety at Work Act, Road Traffic Act, and follow procedures relating to Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations.
  • You will drive a range of vehicles with a gross weight of up to and including 32 tonnes Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV), including tractors, tippers, HIAB crane, tail lift, platform, pick-ups, and transit vans.
  • You will plan workload objectives and allocate work to the team, monitoring standard and performance in line with business objectives.
  • You will understand and follow procedures relating to Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome regulations (HAVS).
  • You will participate in highways emergency call-out and winter services during and out of hours, ensuring the roads of Stockport are kept free of ice and snow in accordance with Stockport Council winter service policy and emergency response.

Requirements

  • You will have experience working on civil engineering projects with competency in a range of construction activities.
  • You will have working knowledge and application of design drawings, specifications, and civil engineering techniques.
  • You will be conversant in all Health and Safety in an operational environment, including COSHH and HAVS.
  • You will hold an NVQ Level 2 or above in Construction Operations.
  • You will hold a current Class C licence, including Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), and be able to conduct pre-use checks, defect reporting/rectification, and gross vehicle weight limits (overloading).
  • You will work flexibly and in the interest of the business and be amenable to business needs.
