Job Title: Highways Driver Chargehand

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Highways Driver Chargehand to join our team at Totally Local Company. As a key member of our Highways team, you will be responsible for delivering minor civil engineering projects to predetermined plans, specifications, timescales, and budget within the Highways department.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Safely carry out repairs and improvements to a variety of built environment infrastructure such as modular paving, kerb installation, bituminous macadam laying, concreting, pipe laying, hard and soft landscaping including drainage repair, excavation, and shoring.
  • Apply safe methods of working through the use of PPE, correct manual handling, use of small plant and equipment such as excavators, roller/breaker, compaction equipment, dumpers, motorized circular saws, and other highways-related equipment.
  • Adhere to the Health & Safety at Work Act, Road Traffic Act, and follow procedures relating to Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations.
  • Drive a range of vehicles with a gross weight of up to and including 32 tonnes Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) including tractors, tippers, HIAB crane, tail lift, platform, pick-ups, and transit vans.
  • Plan workload objectives and allocate work to the team, monitoring standard and performance in line with business objectives.
  • Understand and follow procedures relating to Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome regulations (HAVS).
  • Participate in highways emergency call-out and winter services during and out of hours, ensuring the roads of Stockport are kept free of ice and snow in accordance with Stockport Council winter service policy and emergency response.
Requirements:
  • Experience working on civil engineering projects with competency in a range of construction activities.
  • Working knowledge and application of design drawings, specifications, and civil engineering techniques.
  • Conversant in all Health and Safety in an operational environment including COSHH and HAVS.
  • NVQ Level 2 or above in Construction Operations.
  • Current Class C licence, including Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), and able to conduct pre-use checks, defect reporting/rectification, and gross vehicle weight limits (overloading).
