The School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences at the University of Essex is seeking to appoint a number of Assistant Lecturers to support academic staff in teaching and learning activities.
Main ResponsibilitiesAssistant Lecturers will be responsible for:
- Teaching classes to students, providing them with a thorough knowledge of the subject and enabling them to meet the learning outcomes.
- Preparing lesson plans, reading around the subject, and holding office hours related to the courses taught.
- Undertaking student liaison, including responding to emails and providing feedback to students to support their learning.
- Marking coursework assignments, including the use of FASER.
Applicants should be in their second or third year of study in 2023-2024 and be registered for a postgraduate research degree at the University of Essex during all or part of the academic year 2023-2024. First-year students with relevant teaching experience will be considered.
Applicants should have a good knowledge of the requirements of the subject area of the module taught and an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject area. Successful completion and achievement of descriptor 1 of the UK Professional Standards Framework by the end of the second term of teaching (CADENZA) is also required.
Contractual ArrangementsThe total number of hours per week is determined by the number of classes undertaken by each Assistant Lecturer.
The appointment will be made at the University rates for Assistant Lecturers, depending on hours agreed, at Grade 7 SP 27 (currently \u00a318.09 per hour).
Support, Mentoring and MonitoringAssistant Lecturers must engage in professional development activity related to teaching, learning, and assessment responsibilities. All ALs are expected to achieve Associate Fellowship of the HEA (CADENZA) at the first possible opportunity and by the end of their first year of teaching.
ALs will be paid for all mandatory training, including attendance at the central induction event, mandatory online training, and completion of the CADENZA application.
