About the Role

The School of sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences at the University of Essex is seeking to appoint a number of Assistant Lecturers to support academic staff with teaching or teaching-related duties.

Purpose of the Post

This role provides a development opportunity for postgraduate students to develop their teaching skills in preparation for more senior teaching posts in the future and to achieve professional recognition.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Teaching classes to students, providing them with a thorough knowledge of the subject and enabling them to meet the learning outcomes.
  2. Preparation time – lesson planning, reading around the subject etc.
  3. Holding office hours related to the courses taught and undertaking student liaison.
  4. Additional time to office hours to provide feedback to students to support their learning.
  5. Marking coursework assignments, including use of FASER.

Requirements and Qualifications

Applicants should have a good knowledge of the requirements of the subject area of the module taught and an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject area. Successful completion and achievement of descriptor 1 of the UK Professional Standards Framework by the end of the second term of teaching is also required. Contractual Arrangements

The appointment will be made at the University rates for Assistant Lecturers, depending on hours agreed. The posts will be offered as fixed-term employment contracts until the post holder completes or withdraws from postgraduate studies or enters further completion or an extension to completion period.

Support, Mentoring and Monitoring

Assistant Lecturers must engage in professional development activity related to teaching, learning and assessment responsibilities. All ALs are expected to achieve Associate Fellowship of the HEA at the first possible opportunity and by the end of their first year of teaching. ALs will be paid for all mandatory training.
