Job Summary
The University of Essex is seeking to appoint a number of Assistant Lecturers to support academic staff in the School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences.
Main Responsibilities
- Teaching classes to students, providing them with a thorough knowledge of the subject and enabling them to meet the learning outcomes.
- Preparation time – lesson planning, reading around the subject etc.
- Holding office hours related to the courses taught and undertaking student liaison (e.g. responding to emails).
- Additional time to office hours to provide feedback to students to support their learning.
- Marking coursework assignments, including use of FASER.
Essential Requirements
Applicants should have a good knowledge of the requirements of the subject area of the module taught. You should also have an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject area. Successful completion and achievement of descriptor 1 of the UK Professional Standards Framework by the end of the second term of teaching (CADENZA) is also required. Assistant Lecturers who have previously taught within the School should hold CADENZA accreditation in order to be considered.
Contractual Arrangements
The total number of hours per week is determined by the number of classes undertaken by each Assistant Lecturer.
The appointment will be made at the University rates for Assistant Lecturers, depending on hours agreed, at Grade 7 SP 27 (currently £18.09 per hour).
The posts will be offered as fixed-term employment contracts until the post holder completes or withdraws from postgraduate studies or enters further completion or an extension to completion period.
Assistant Lecturers will be paid for all mandatory training, including attendance at the central induction event, mandatory online training, and completion of the CADENZA application.
Support, Mentoring and Monitoring
Assistant Lecturers must engage in professional development activity related to teaching, learning and assessment responsibilities. All ALs are expected to achieve Associate Fellowship of the HEA (CADENZA) at the first possible opportunity and by the end of their first year of teaching (or they will not normally be able to continue teaching as an AL).
Assistant Lecturers are also expected to play a wider citizenship role in the School, including involvement in module development and review, and representation at Departmental meetings and events.
