PhD Researcher in Polymer Mechanics

Nottingham, Nottingham, United Kingdom University of Nottingham Full time

Project Overview:

This PhD research opportunity is part of a collaborative project between the University of Nottingham and the University of Oxford to investigate the failure of amorphous polymers under impact. The project aims to develop material models that can be used in computer simulations of ballistic events, providing insight into the effects of processing on the final response.

Research Objectives:

  • To develop a new rate and temperature-dependent constitutive model for amorphous polymers
  • To implement failure criteria compatible with the model in finite element software
  • To validate the material model and failure criteria using experimental data from our project partners in Oxford

Key Responsibilities:

  • Building on an existing polymer constitutive model and implementing failure criteria
  • Implementing a user material in finite element software
  • Validating the material model and failure criteria using experimental data

Requirements:

  • First-class honours degree in Engineering, Physics, or Materials Science
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English
  • Interest in properties of polymers, particularly under dynamic loading
  • Experience with finite element codes, preferably with Abaqus
  • Ability to program, preferably in Matlab

Application Procedure:

Applicants are encouraged to send a copy of their covering letter, CV, and academic transcripts to Dr Davide De Focatiis.
