Nottingham, Nottingham, United Kingdom University of Nottingham Full time

Project Overview

The University of Nottingham is seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to join a collaborative research project with the University of Oxford. The project aims to develop material models for simulating ballistic events in polymers, focusing on understanding the effects of processing history on deformation and failure behavior.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a polymer constitutive model in finite element software, compatible with existing research
  • Validate the material model and failure criteria using experimental data from project partners in Oxford
  • Collaborate with partners to design experiments and simulations to explore the effects of residual stresses and thermal and surface treatments on polymer failure

Requirements

  • First-class honours degree in Engineering, Physics, or Materials Science
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English
  • Interest in properties of polymers, particularly under dynamic loading
  • Experience with finite element codes, preferably with Abaqus
  • Ability to program, preferably in Matlab

Eligibility

This studentship is fully funded at the Home student level, covering course fees and stipend. The stipend is tax-free and provides a maintenance grant.

What We Offer

  • A supportive and inclusive research environment
  • Opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing with international partners
  • Access to state-of-the-art research facilities and equipment

How to Apply

Applicants are encouraged to send a copy of their covering letter, CV, and academic transcripts to the project lead. The University of Nottingham is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from diverse backgrounds.
