About the Role

The Rosalind Franklin Institute is a national Research Centre dedicated to bringing about transformative changes in life science through interdisciplinary research and technology. Our scientific focus is on understanding the impact of viruses on the body, expanding from structural models of proteins to observing changes in tissues.

We are currently expanding and looking to recruit Senior Research Software Engineers (RSE) for our Artificial Intelligence and Informatics Theme. As a RSE, you will be working 50% as part of the Core team who maintain institute-wide Data and Compute infrastructure, and 50% collaboratively with our research project teams, providing expert advice and assistance as they tackle challenging problems across scientific disciplines.

The Franklin faces unique technology challenges as it processes multi-terabytes of data per day with a variety of complex scientific software, often on high-performance computing resources. Our AI Core Team has built and is constantly improving the cloud-based data and compute infrastructure, allowing scientists to process their workflows from taking data on instruments to disseminating data via publication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate on projects with other groups to develop scientific software, such as web applications, APIs, Machine Learning, and Image processing.
  • Write and deploy scientific software, making the best use of our existing cloud/HPC/data infrastructure.
  • Apply good software development practices, such as CI/CD, writing tests, and installers.
  • Gather requirements.
  • Collaborate with software support groups in STFC Scientific Computing Department and The Rosalind Franklin Institute to facilitate software teams working on specific Franklin projects.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive and up-to-date best practice documentation for all members of the Franklin.
  • Attend scientific seminars and meetings to stay up-to-date with developments in software and methodology.
  • Manage and develop projects for Graduate and Student placements associated with the Franklin.
  • Line Manage RSEs and RSAs.
  • Disseminate results through writing papers and presenting at scientific meetings.
  • Contribute to the public engagement in science programme of the Franklin.
  • Support the Core team in development and maintenance of compute and data infrastructure.
  • Provide user support and service management, including training, writing documentation, and support.
