The Rosalind Franklin Institute is a premier national Research Centre, supported by the UK government through UK Research and Innovation, committed to driving transformative advancements in life sciences through interdisciplinary research and innovative technology. Our scientific mission focuses on understanding the effects of viruses on the human body, ranging from structural protein models to observing alterations in tissues.
We are currently seeking to expand our team by recruiting Lead Software Engineers (RSE) for our Artificial Intelligence and Informatics Theme. The title of RSE is a recognized designation within our institute, and more information about the role can be found through our resources. The successful candidate will engage in a dual capacity, dedicating 50% of their time to the Core team responsible for maintaining the institute-wide Data and Compute infrastructure, while the remaining 50% will be spent collaborating with various research project teams, providing expert guidance and support as they navigate complex challenges across diverse scientific domains at the Franklin.
The Franklin encounters unique technological hurdles as it processes vast amounts of data daily, utilizing a variety of sophisticated scientific software, often on high-performance computing platforms. Our AI Core Team has developed and continuously enhances a cloud-based data and compute infrastructure that empowers scientists to manage their workflows, from data acquisition on instruments to data dissemination through publications. As a senior RSE, you will play a pivotal role in advancing this infrastructure to align with the scientific objectives of the Franklin. Your responsibilities will include adapting our workloads to state-of-the-art technology and designing and developing software tailored to meet research requirements.
Key Responsibilities
As a member of the Artificial Intelligence and Informatics group, your role will encompass supporting one or more of the following technological areas integral to our infrastructure:
- Collaborating on projects with other teams to create scientific software, including web applications, APIs, machine learning models, and image processing tools.
- Developing and deploying scientific software that optimally utilizes our existing cloud, HPC, and data infrastructure.
- Adhering to best software development practices, including CI/CD, testing, and installer creation.
- Conducting requirements gathering to ensure alignment with project goals.
- Working alongside software support teams within the STFC Scientific Computing Department and the Rosalind Franklin Institute to facilitate collaborative efforts on specific projects.
- Creating and maintaining comprehensive best practice documentation for all Franklin team members.
- Participating in scientific seminars and meetings to stay informed about advancements in software and methodologies.
- Managing and developing projects for graduate and student placements associated with the Franklin.
- Providing line management for RSEs and RSAs.
- Disseminating research findings through writing papers and presenting at scientific conferences.
- Contributing to the Franklin's public engagement initiatives in science.
- Supporting the core team in the development and maintenance of compute and data infrastructure.
- Offering user support and service management, including training, documentation, and assistance.
