Harwell, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom Rosalind Franklin Institute Full time

Position Overview

The Rosalind Franklin Institute is a premier national Research Centre, supported by the UK government through UK Research and Innovation, committed to pioneering advancements in life sciences through collaborative research and innovative technology. Our scientific mission focuses on understanding the effects of viruses on the human body, extending from detailed structural analyses of proteins to observing alterations in tissues.

We are currently seeking to expand our team by recruiting Lead Software Engineers (RSE) for our Artificial Intelligence and Informatics Theme. The title of Research Software Engineer is a recognized designation within our institute, and you can learn more about the role's definition here. The successful candidate will engage in a dual capacity, dedicating 50% of their time to the Core team responsible for maintaining the institute-wide Data and Compute infrastructure, while the other 50% will be spent collaborating with our research project teams, providing expert guidance and support as they address complex challenges across various scientific fields at the Franklin.

The Franklin encounters distinct technological challenges as it processes vast amounts of data daily, utilizing a range of sophisticated scientific software, often on high-performance computing resources. Our AI Core Team has developed and continually enhances a cloud-based data and compute infrastructure that enables scientists to manage their workflows from data acquisition on instruments to data dissemination through publications. As a senior RSE, you will play a crucial role in advancing this infrastructure to align with the Franklin's scientific objectives. Your responsibilities will include adapting our workloads to state-of-the-art technology and designing and developing software tailored to meet research demands.

Key Responsibilities

As a member of the Artificial Intelligence and Informatics group, your role will encompass supporting one or more of the following technologies integral to our infrastructure:

  • Collaborating on projects with other teams to create scientific software, including web applications, APIs, machine learning, and image processing.
  • Developing and deploying scientific software while optimizing the use of our existing cloud, HPC, and data infrastructure.
  • Implementing best practices in software development, such as CI/CD, and writing tests and installers.
  • Gathering requirements effectively.
  • Working alongside software support teams in the STFC Scientific Computing Department and The Rosalind Franklin Institute to facilitate collaboration on specific Franklin projects.
  • Creating and maintaining comprehensive and up-to-date best practice documentation for all Franklin team members.
  • Participating in scientific seminars and meetings to stay informed about advancements in software and methodologies.
  • Managing and developing projects for graduate and student placements associated with the Franklin.
  • Providing line management for RSEs and RSAs.
  • Disseminating research findings through writing papers and presenting at scientific conferences.
  • Contributing to the Franklin's public engagement in science initiatives.
  • Supporting the core team in the development and maintenance of compute and data infrastructure.
  • Offering user support and service management, including training, documentation, and assistance.
