Job Overview

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development seeks an experienced Strategic Counsellor to provide in-depth political analysis and advice on regional politics. This role requires a deep understanding of the political landscape in Sub-Saharan Africa and the ability to assess compliance with the Bank's mandate.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of political developments in assigned countries, focusing on Sub-Saharan Africa, using remote and in-country sources to assess compliance with the Bank's Article 1 mandate.
  • Prepare comprehensive political and economic assessments for Country Diagnostics, Strategies, and Updates, setting the context for the Bank's investment and policy engagement.
  • Provide expert advice to senior management and the Board on regional politics and diplomacy, preparing written briefs as needed to inform high-level dialogue and strategic decision-making.
  • Liaise with high-level officials in governments, maintain political dialogue, and serve as a focal point for contact with relevant government departments and institutions.
  • Develop and maintain links with inter-governmental organisations active in the region, such as the UN and its agencies, and regional organisations.

Requirements

  • An advanced degree in a relevant field, such as politics, international relations, or economics.
  • Extensive experience in a number of SSA countries, with in-depth knowledge of their politics, history, and culture.
  • Diplomatic experience and sophisticated diplomatic skills, including regular contact with high-level national and international officials.
  • A good understanding of political economy issues in SSA.
  • Ability to operate independently at a senior level, with excellent communication and report writing skills in English.
  • Strong partnership skills and fluency in languages spoken in the region.
